Far better to concentrate on weakening the hold of the Mullahs. According to all the history we have on Iran, the people want peace and an end to the sanctions that both starve them and deprive their medical resources of many advanced Western drugs. Iran will probably spend years under the current regime practicing the delivery system they have available, similar to the North Koreans, it is one thing to have a weapon, it is ten times more difficult to ensure it reaches the intended target. If Trump manages to persuade the Mullahs to restrict their nuclear development, he will have done some good for the world.

At some point one needs to draw on perceptions rooted in psychology to place probabilities on the turn of future events. In this case, what is more important to the authorities in Tehran: the state of the economy or the completion of their nuclear weapons capability. So far, the record indicates that the discomfort of the population probably matters less to them, especially if they believe in their powers of suppression. In this scenario, only the US remains to reign them in, and since the Americans are not succeeding with economic measures, it's hard to see how a military confrontation will be avoided. Especially with Netanyahu chomping at the bit to destroy their nuclear capability. They moved those aircraft into striking range for a reason. While one hopes a conflagration can be avoided, it's looking like the lower probability outcome.
